APBS 2017 Information for Presenters

Oral Session Guidelines

Oral Presentations are 75 minutes in length and will occur at various times throughout the conference on March 2nd & 3rd, 2017.

All presenters, regardless of presentation format, must register to attend and to participate in the conference.

Oral presentation session presenters are provided with a screen, LCD projectors and microphone (where needed). Laptops are the responsibility of the presenter. If you need to rent a laptop for your presentation, please download the AV form and return to the appropriate party (specified on the forms). Please keep in mind that rented equipment is at the expense of the presenter.

Ignite Session Guidelines

In an Ignite Session, each presenter/proposal will receive from 5-10 minutes to present about one important aspect of their experience. A 75 minute time slot may include presentations from 7-10 different presenters arranged around a common theme. This year we will allocate at least three themes for Ignite Sessions: School, district and state applications of PBIS. Proposals can select to be considered for and Ignite Session. Oral presentations that are not selected for the conference may also be contacted about participating in an Ignite Session

Symposium Session Guidelines

Symposium Sessions - A symposium session provides several (sometimes contrasting) views on a single topic or issue. Three to four people each provide a 15–20 minute presentation related to an issue or a theme. The presenters and themes will be organized by the APBS Training and Education Committee. Proposals can select to be considered for and Symposium Session. Oral presentations that are not selected for a full session may also be contacted about participating in an Symposium Session

Poster Session Guidelines

Posters will be presented Thursday evening, March 2nd, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in conjunction with the conference reception.

All presenters, regardless of presentation format, must register to attend and to participate in the conference.

Each poster presentation will be provided a 6’x18" table on which to display information and a tri-fold foam presentation board. The boards are 36" high by 48" wide. Presentation boards will be avilable for pick up on Wednesday, March 1st from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m in the registration office. Any boards not picked up prior will be brought to the Poster Session in the Plaza Ballroom).

Poster presenters are not supplied with audio visual equipment, Internet access or electrical power. Please keep in mind that rented equipment, electrical, and internet is at the expense of the presenter. If you need audio visual equipment, such as a laptop or projector, please download the AV Form and email or fax it to PSAV (address on form).

There will be two scholarships awarded for students who present scholarly work at the Reception/Poster Session. Awards will be given to students who present original research or original research-based practitioner or teacher education information. If the only entries to the contest fall into the research-based or practitioner/teacher education category then two awards shall be presented within that single category to ensure that two awards are delivered per year.

To be considered for the APBS Student Poster Presentation Award presenters must: (1) be present and set-up 30 minutes prior to the start of the Reception/Poster Session; and (2) visibly post their APBS generated Poster Session sign.

Skill-Building Workshop Guidelines

Skill-Building Workshops will be held Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 1-5 p.m. and Saturday, March 4, 2017. Morning Half Day Workshops will be held 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Full Day Workshops will be held 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Guidelines for Developing Presentations for the APBS Conference:

  • Follow all copyright laws in handouts and slides
  • Use person-first language (see below)
  • Bullet points (typically 3 per page… not paragraphs)
  • Background – light, preferably white, with no patterns
  • Font:
    • Size:
      • Title Slide: 44
      • Content Headers: 40 or larger
      • Content: 24 or larger
    • Color:
      • Black for most, BLUE for emphasis
  • If you want audience to really see your graphs or graphics, print them out
  • Added graphics must help emphasize the point to be made, rather than as decoration (e.g., student images with quotes, star to note handout, data graph to illustrate point)
  • If you include other sources of information (e.g, quote), be sure to always reference using APA format:
    1. On slide where quoted or referenced (Crone, Hawken & Horner 2010 – add page # if quote)
    2. On last slide (APA Citation of each source referenced or quoted)

Guidelines for Submitting Conference Presentations for Publication Online

  • Submit presentation files in one of two formats:
    • 1) Standard PowerPoint file (.ppt or .pptx)
    • 2) PDF in 6-slides per page format only
      • NOTE: PDFs with one slide per page will be returned and the correct format requested.
      • PDF of one slide per page is only acceptable for Poster Presentation (where it is assumed that the single slide shows the entire poster)
  • Additional files (handouts, notes, tools, etc.) that were discussed in your presentation may also be posted.
  • Files should be sent directly to presentations@apbs.org

As an added benefit to our Attendees and APBS Members, we would like to post as many of the conference session presentation materials on the APBS Conference Mobile App and the Member section of the APBS Website prior to the conference. If presenters could send their materials to presentations@apbs.org by February 22nd, we can accomplish that goal. Please keeping mind that we will continue accepting presentations during and after the conference and will post them as soon as we can. Please note your session number from the Agenda Program (available on the conference website mid December) when submitting materials.

What is Person-First Language?

Person-first language puts the person before the disability or category. Instead of referring to someone as an autistic person, we describe the person as having autism. The idea is that we do not use a diagnosis as a defining characteristic.

APBS is committed to the use of person-first language throughout all correspondence including the website, conference media, and any business emails. This means that individuals use person-first language when they submit their conference proposals including titles, abstracts, and session descriptions. It also means that as of November, 2010, we will not be posting information on the site that does not conform to “Person-First” language.
